Is Th17 immune activation behind your symptoms?

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or infection, and it is vital for protecting us from harm. One type of inflammation in particular, known as TH17 inflammation, has recently gained attention for its role in both promoting immunity against certain diseases and causing autoimmune disorders.

Understanding this type of inflammation can ensure that we are doing all we can to keep our eyes healthy and vibrant. What are the telltale clues this may be part of your root cause of eye dryness?

1. Chronic sinus issues, such as recurrent infections or prolonged inflammation of sinuses

2. History of gut issues, such as IBD or IBS

3. Current diagnosis or suspicion of autoimmunity

Th-17 cells are a type of white blood cell responsible for stimulating immune system responses. They help combat harmful bacteria by releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines that attract other cells to the affected area. However, if Th-17 cells become overactive they can also cause chronic inflammation which can damage healthy tissue and lead to autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Sjogren's.

The exact cause of Th-17 cell over-activation is not yet clear; however, research points to lifestyle factors as potential contributors, which is why we use targeted foods to address it in our 10-week program.

These may include dietary changes such as increasing consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds etc.) while reducing consumption of processed foods; exercising regularly; quitting smoking if applicable; making use of relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation; supplementing with probiotics or herbs like curcumin (found in turmeric); and avoiding environmental toxins where possible.

Ultimately managing Th-17 inflammation requires a multi-pronged approach — one that takes into account both environmental factors at play as well as treating any underlying issues contributing towards inflammation itself, like latent infections or heavy metal toxicity.
